This is a garden which surrounds a Georgian house overlooking Dalkey Island in Co Dublin. We substantially replanted and overhauled it several years ago, and have done this a second time after the owner extended and upgraded the house. It uses plants to make a series of different spaces and atmospheres, and has some very steep level changes which are managed by terraces, dry stone walls and curving steps. The overall look is colourful and classic, designed to be at its best in spring and summer. The area around the modern part of the house has clipped box hedge and a line of standard Bay trees. On the other side of the house the garden is an informal woodland garden with a winding path through bulbs, perennials and flowering shrubs.

A detail showing the layout of the garden around the new extension. The new part of the garden was designed to be more angular, in keeping with the strikingly modern new part of the house.

A line of mature bay trees dividing the parking area from the main lawn. The box hedge contains borders filled with Rosa 'Blanc double de Coubert' as well as various bulbs and perennials.

Annual and perennial flowers, sown by seed in Spring, along an out-of-the-way wall at the rear of the garden.
