A European native tree which has a variety of berries and flowers in spring and autumn. The yellow flowers appear early in the year in February, and edible berries appear in the autumn. The very dense wood is so heavy that it sinks in water and is highly-prized - as it has been for many centuries - by woodworkers and craftspeople. The fruit is used in jams, in distilling and in sauces in many part of Europe, particularly south-east Europe. Although it can grow to be a specimen tree up to 15 metres, it can also be maintained as a hedge at approximately 1.5 metres upwards. Like many Cornus, it prefers damp soil (though not permanently waterlogged) and a sheltered spot. 2 litre containers / 30-40 cms tall.
