Taxus bacatta

Yew, Iúr (bare root)

Price: €2.95

Yew makes an excellent hedge: hardy, evergreen and perfect for clipping or topiary. Excellent for cities, suburbs and rural areas. Yew is a long-lived conifer with dark green needle-like foliage, reddish bark and red berries, as is 1 of only 2 conifers native to Ireland (the other being Scots' pine). It can grow to be a magnificent tree, or be clipped into any shape or size. The berries and foliage are poisonous, which is why it was traditionally planted in graveyards: one of the few places surrounded by walls. Tolerant of most conditions, including light shade and dry soil (once established). For a hedge, plant 2-3 plants per metre and keep weeded at the base whilst establishing. Larger plants also available - please enquire for details.
