Like many birches, this is a medium-sized, deciduous tree with striking bark. This tree, native to the eastern United States, was traditionally the source for Wintergreen, and the shoots were used by Native American people as medicinal tooth-picks. It was also used as a flavouring for root beer and the timber was considered a 'poor man's mahogany' because it darkens considerably after it has been cut. Ultmate height 15 - 20 metres. Suitable for moist soils in a relatively sheltered area, protected from strong winds. Irish-grown plants150- 200 cms tall. Please note: items displayed on this website may not be in stock in each of our shops. (A)
